As a technology cluster, we promote the responsible use of artificial intelligence and smart data and develop solutions to digital challenges. Together with our partners and members, we foster AI innovations that strengthen businesses, academia, and society in the long term and support cross-industry collaboration.

What We Do

Behind the Cluster AIR is a network of industry and academic partners engaged in the research and application of artificial intelligence. Their shared goal is to create a comprehensive ecosystem for artificial intelligence and smart data in Regensburg. Through collaboration across a wide range of disciplines, AIR provides a platform for addressing the challenges posed by AI and fostering cross-industry cooperation.

The AIR network, headquartered at TechBase Regensburg, is managed by TechBase Regensburg GmbH, a subsidiary of the City of Regensburg.

Areas of Application

AIR operates across various industries, focusing on the following application areas, which represent the core of the Regensburg region in the field of AI.

Mobility

Mobility is one of the areas that poses the greatest challenges to society: energy consumption, ensuring smooth operations, and optimizing the utilization of global transportation networks. At the same time, there is an expectation for ever-greater flexibility, and the world is growing ever closer together as a result of globalization and the increasing movement of goods and people.

AI methods can predict emerging problems or bottlenecks, inform stakeholders about the most resource-efficient approaches, and ensure the necessary control and regulation. And all of this in a very short time.

Industrial Production

Industrial production is one of the fields in which AI is already deeply integrated. Predictive maintenance, smart logistics (e.g., shipment tracking), and single-unit production (custom and made-to-order manufacturing at the price of mass production) are just a few of the areas companies are researching and working on. AI technologies for predicting signs of wear or potential faults are already in use today.

In this area in particular, artificial intelligence provides a strong foundation for developing effective methods and thereby making production more efficient. Due to the large volumes of data generated, this field is also of great interest to researchers and is one of the key focuses of the AIR Initiative.

Health

Early disease detection, personalized cancer therapies, or tumor imaging diagnostics whose quality even surpasses that of human interpretation—artificial intelligence makes an enormous contribution to the medical and healthcare sectors by supporting treating physicians, thereby also benefiting patients.

The healthcare system offers many areas of application for further developing and utilizing AI methods. AI can assist here with therapies, surgeries, and even infection prevention. This holds great potential not only for improving individual healthcare but also for the healthcare sector as a whole.

The development and promotion of AI methods in this field is therefore an important aspect that AIR also focuses on.

Energy

Artificial intelligence offers enormous potential for the energy sector, as it can not only make processes more efficient and cost-effective, but also help optimize energy flows, manage resources, and reduce CO₂ emissions. From the intelligent analysis of large amounts of data to optimize energy grids to the automation of maintenance and operational processes—AI can transform numerous areas of the energy sector. Challenges such as data protection, cybersecurity, and seamless integration into existing systems present significant hurdles.

CULTURE & CREATIVITY

Generative AI is transforming the cultural and creative industries. It opens up new possibilities—from automated art to the optimization of creative processes. At the same time, the use of AI raises various questions: How does it affect originality and authenticity? Who owns the copyrights to AI-generated works? How can AI be used as a tool to enhance creativity rather than reproduce or replace it? These topics require a critical examination of the possibilities and limitations of AI in the creative industries. AIR’s “Haus der KI” programs provide insights into these issues.
